Snowbird Season Moves on the Broward Coast: Booking Movers from November to April

Short answer

In South Florida, snowbird season runs November through April, when seasonal residents arrive, buy, sell and leave. On the Broward coast, weekend moving dates can fill three to four weeks ahead. Book early, pick a weekday your condo allows, reserve the service elevator first and send the building's insurance requirements to your mover.

Snowbird moving season in South Florida runs from November to April, and on the Broward coast it changes how you book movers. Seasonal residents arrive in the fall and leave in spring, buying, selling and downsizing in between, so weekend dates can fill three to four weeks ahead. If your move falls in that window, book early, choose a weekday your building allows, and settle the association paperwork before you fly in or out.

This guide covers the fall arrivals, the spring departures, moving a condo while you are a thousand miles away, and closing up properly before hurricane season starts on June 1.

How Snowbird Moving Season Works in South Florida

The coast fills up in winter. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea nearly doubles in population, the A1A high-rises in Pompano Beach light up again, and 55+ communities like Leisureville and the golf-course condos of Palm Aire come back to life. Moving demand follows the people.

PeriodWhat drives movesBooking pressure
October to early DecemberArrivals, new purchases, furniture deliveries into reopened condosRising; weekends go first
January to MarchSales and purchases, downsizing, families moving a parent to a smaller unitSteady; Saturdays and month-end are tight
AprilDepartures, closing up units, shipping furniture north, closings before summerHeavy in the last weeks of the season
May to OctoberYear-round residents, summer lease turnover, storm reschedulesLighter on the coast, but month-end still fills

Crews that work condo buildings are limited by the buildings too: one service elevator, one move window a day, and often weekdays only. In season, the building calendar is usually tighter than the mover calendar.

When to Book Movers Between November and April

  • Book four to six weeks out for a weekend in season, and earlier if one specific Saturday is non-negotiable.
  • Prefer midweek. Tuesday to Thursday dates are easier to get, and many associations allow weekday moves only.
  • Stay clear of the first and last days of the month when you can, since apartment lease turnover competes for the same crews.
  • Line up the building first. Book the elevator window and get the association's certificate of insurance requirements, then confirm the mover. Our guide to condo move-in rules in Pompano Beach explains how that works.
  • Get a written estimate after an inventory, even when you book from out of state by phone or video.

Moving a Seasonal Condo When You Are Not There

Plenty of snowbird moves happen with the owner up north. A crew can still do the job well when a few things are arranged ahead of time:

  • A local contact with keys (a neighbor, relative or the management office) who can let the crew in and check the unit afterward.
  • Written notice to the association naming the mover and the date.
  • A clear list, with photos, of what goes and what stays, especially in a furnished unit being sold with some furniture.
  • Packing services booked for the day before, so the crew arrives to a packed home rather than full closets.
  • A plan for keys, garage remotes and parking decals once the move is done.

Neighborhoods differ. Seasonal homes on the canals of Lighthouse Point often hold larger households and heavier pieces than a beach condo, and may need a packing day before the loading day. In Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, small low-rise buildings off A1A have little truck parking, so timing depends on where the truck can stand. For high-rise units, our condo and apartment movers page covers elevator and building logistics.

Shipping Furniture North or Moving South for Good

Some seasonal moves leave Florida: a condo sold and its furniture sent to a home up north, or a full move south in the other direction. Moves across state lines fall under federal rules. The company carrying your goods needs a USDOT number and MC operating authority from FMCSA, and with a non-binding estimate it can require you to pay no more than 110% of the estimate at delivery, with any balance billed later.

Our page on long distance movers from Pompano Beach explains how out-of-state moves are planned and quoted, and our guide on checking a mover's Florida and federal registration shows how to confirm the numbers yourself.

Long-distance loads can share a truck with other households, so delivery often comes as a window rather than a fixed day. If you fly out right after loading, make sure someone can receive the shipment at the other end.

Closing Up Before Hurricane Season

Spring departures come just weeks before hurricane season opens on June 1. If you are leaving a unit empty for the summer, or leaving it mid-sale, plan the move so the place is ready for storms:

  • Bring in balcony and patio furniture; many associations require it before owners leave.
  • Keep boxes and furniture away from sliding doors and storm shutter tracks so shutters can close.
  • Leave a working contact number with the association and your local key holder.
  • If the move slips into June, watch the National Hurricane Center outlook in the days before move day.

Summer moves on the coast also bring afternoon thunderstorms most days. Morning starts help, and so does plastic wrap or covers on upholstered pieces between the door and the truck.

Where seasonal moves go sideways in the planning

Snowbird moves rarely fall apart on the day itself. They come unstuck weeks earlier, usually because two separate schedules get treated as one.

  • The long-distance pickup sets the calendar. When part of the household goes north and part stays in Florida, book the interstate pickup window first and fit the local crew around it, not the other way round.
  • Fall deliveries compete for the elevator. New furniture for a reopened condo often comes from a store that books the same service elevator. Do not put the store delivery and the move on one day unless the building confirms two windows.
  • Cartons left in a shut unit. Boxes and upholstery that sit all summer in a closed condo can pick up moisture and mildew. If things must stay, raise cartons off the tile and check what your association expects for air conditioning in a vacant unit.
  • The late-April crunch. Departures, closings and lease ends stack up in the last two weeks of the season. If your flight is fixed, move the furniture several days before you fly.

The tradeoff is a few days in a half-empty condo. Most people find that easier than watching the clock at the airport while a crew is still loading.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should snowbirds book movers?

For a weekend between November and April, book at least three to four weeks ahead, and more if you need one specific date. Midweek dates are easier to find and suit the many condo associations that allow weekday moves only. Reserve the building's elevator window and send the certificate of insurance request at the same time, because in season the building's calendar is usually tighter than the mover's.

Can I book a move for my Florida condo while I'm still up north?

Yes. Most of the planning works by phone, email and video. Give the mover a detailed inventory or a video walkthrough, arrange for someone local to hold keys and meet the crew, and send the association the mover details it asks for. Ask for the written estimate before you commit, and have your local contact walk the unit after the crew leaves and send you photos.

Is winter a slow time to book movers in South Florida?

Not on the coast. National guides call winter the off-season, and inland that can be true, but in coastal Broward seasonal residents keep condo moves busy from November to April. The easier dates inside the season are midweek and mid-month, away from the holiday weeks and the late-April departure rush. If you live here year-round and your date is flexible, May is often calmer, before summer lease turnover and the June 1 start of hurricane season.

Can the movers take my car north with the furniture?

Usually not. Household movers carry furniture and boxes, and cars normally travel with a separate auto transport company on its own schedule. Car carriers heading north get busiest in early April, so book that transport well ahead and line up its pickup with your long-distance move. Empty the car of personal items first, and do not count on packing boxes in the trunk unless the transport company agrees to it in writing.

The bottom line

Snowbird season rewards people who plan around the calendar: an early booking, a weekday date, association paperwork in order and a local contact with keys. With those four in place, a seasonal move on the Broward coast runs like any other.
